The difference between water-based lubricant and silicone-based lubricant

There are a few reasons why you might want to use lube during sex, or solo play. From vaginal dryness caused by birth control or menopause to wanting to try something new, but in our opinion, you don't really need a reason at all. Lube is an aid to everyone's sex life, whether you're alone or with a partner - it's just a matter of choosing the right type for you. Research has shown that lubricants improve sexual pleasure regardless of the type of sex you have.

Different types of lubricants

It can be difficult to know which lubricant is right for you and easy to assume that any will work. But the fact is that water-based and silicone-based lubes each have their own advantages and disadvantages that it's important to know before you buy.

Water-based lubricant

Water-based lubes don't last as long as silicone-based lubes, and water-based lubes wash off easily with water, so they're not ideal for use in the shower. You need to reapply water-based lube more often than other types of lube, so that's something to keep in mind if you want to avoid breakouts.

That said, water-based lubes are safe for everyone to use, won't stain your clothes or sheets, and won't affect condoms or sex toys. They're less likely to cause a reaction in people with sensitive skin compared to silicone-based lubes, especially since they don't need soap to rinse off. This means that there is not as much disruption to the natural bacterial balance of the vagina when cleaning. The penis is also not at risk of irritation when using a water-based lubricant of high quality.

Silicone-based lubricant

silicone-based lube also doesn't wash off easily with water, and you'll ideally need soap to wash it off. This makes it great to use in the shower, but remember that soap can be irritating to the sensitive skin of the vulva and vagina, so if you have sensitive skin in this area, this is something to keep in mind. Silicone-based lubes can also cause stains, so be careful with your sheets and clothes.

Unlike oil-based lube, silicone-based lube is safe to use with condoms and is good for sensitive skin. However, silicone-based lubricants should not be used on sex toys made of silicone. Over time, silicone-based lubricants can deteriorate silicone toys, so if you are going to use lubricants with your toys, we always recommend using a water-based lubricant as soon as any part of your toy is made of silicone. This damage can cause scratch marks on the surface of the sex toy, making it harder to clean and increasing the amount of bacteria it can carry. Not ideal.
